One of the most common questions we receive is about identification requirements for notarization. Here's a complete guide to what's acceptable and what to do if you have concerns.
Standard Acceptable ID
The following forms of identification are generally acceptable for notarization in Ohio:
- Driver's license (Ohio or any U.S. state)
- State-issued ID card
- U.S. passport or passport card
- U.S. military ID
- Permanent resident card (Green Card)
- Foreign passport (valid and unexpired)
Key Requirements
Current and unexpired: Your ID must be current. Expired IDs are generally not acceptable.
Government-issued: The ID must be issued by a government authority — not a library card, student ID, or employer badge.
Photo ID: A photo must be present on the ID.
Name match: The name on your ID should match the name on the document being notarized. Minor discrepancies (middle name vs. middle initial) may be acceptable, but significant differences can be problematic.
What If Your Name Doesn't Match?
If there's a discrepancy between your ID and the document — for example, if you've recently married or divorced and your ID hasn't been updated — contact us before your appointment. In some cases, we can accept additional documentation to bridge the gap.
What If You Don't Have a Photo ID?
In limited circumstances, a "credible identifying witness" can vouch for your identity. This is a person who:
- Knows you personally
- Has acceptable photo ID themselves
- Is not a party to the transaction
- Swears under oath that you are who you say you are
This option is used sparingly and at the notary's discretion. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
For RON Appointments
Remote Online Notarization uses digital ID verification technology that can verify most standard government-issued IDs. You'll need to have your ID ready to show on camera during the video call.
